Technology at the heart of manufacturing: 3D modeling
Once the initial idea and sketch have been developed, it's time to start working on the digital model. Using CAD (Computer Aided Design) software, the 3D designer makes a digital rendering of the jewelry.
In most modern jewelry production, the manufacturer uses a 3D printing machine to print a resin-based wax model, which usually takes no more than 48 hours.
The metal casting
The next step is to take the piece of jewelry through the casting process... At this point, the piece begins to look more like the jewelry you might see in a store. The wax is melted and replaced with the metal of your choice in molten form, usually gold, silver or platinum. The metal then dries into the shape of your jewelry. This technique is called "lost wax" casting.
The first assembly of the jewelry
After the jewelry goes through the design and casting stage, the final fabrication can take anywhere from three days to three weeks depending on the complexity. At this stage, the jeweler refines the main structure of your ring, necklace or other piece. The jeweler will file away the "casting skin" to reveal the metal underneath. Although the casting has transformed the jewelry into fine metal, the jeweler must make any necessary aesthetic adjustments and ensure that the piece can functionally support the gemstones.
Once the mounting is complete, the jewelry is ready for setting. If the piece requires additional enameling or design work, this should take place before the stone setting stage.
The stone setting process
For this step, the diamond setter finally adds the diamonds or other gemstones onto your piece. He carefully places the center stone into the setting. If they are stones that are to be placed on the side of your piece, the setter must hand-drill them before setting. Using a microscope, he then places each stone separately.
In the final step, a polisher makes sure the metal is polished to perfection so that it is as bright as possible. Any final additions such as engravings are also applied. Finally, the jewelry is inspected and every detail is analyzed to ensure successful production.
